When you first begin training in Tai Chi there are many things that you feel you need to practice. Sometimes the information you gained in class can be overwhelming. During that state we focus more on how much there is to work on versus just focusing on one detail or movement. When we're able to accept that we have much to learn and that Tai Chi is more of a journey than anything else that allows us to move forward with progression. I've had many comments from previous students stating that they focus more on getting all the movements instead of increasing awareness of the feeling in each motion. Increasing your awareness helps more in the long run towards health and longevity. The basis for that conclusion is because awareness is key to feeling energy flow throughout your body. Tai Chi is never about more movements. It's about what we feel more than anything. What it comes down to is back to a blog that I wrote earlier before about what you hope to gain from Tai Chi. Remember Tai Chi was first a martial art that focused on self-defense. Then later down the road it became known for having great health benefits. So, in a nutshell when you practice in class or at home just understand the difference of each focus and the feeling it generates through your intentions and in turn your awareness will build.
